Kevin Murphy Product Review!

Kevin Murphy products tested by Vancouver Mobile Hairstylist! Hydrate Me Wash and Rinse, Hair Resort, Body Guard, Born Again Treatment, Staying Alive Spray

***Dear Readers:  I have received many calls and emails from those of you who would like to purchase Kevin Murphy Products through me. I do not sell products because I have limited space in my car each day; however, I do know the line well enough to make recommendations for you.  The good news is that this awesome natural hair product line is available in so many salons across Vancouver that you are bound to have one really close by your home! Simply use this page to search for one near you….or head over to Heritage Hair Salon 2308 West Broadway and tell Kirsten I sent you…you can trust her to find the right product for you!

I can’t even believe I’m saying this, but Kevin Murphy is my new favourite haircare line OF ALL TIME. This is a big deal! I went out yesterday and bought the salon back-bar sizes of the Hydrate.Me wash and rinse, so it’s official. I can’t wait to tell you guys all about the products I’ve tried…and I haven’t even used the entire line yet!

So firstly, I want to talk about the packaging.  I appreciate how neatly these bottles stack on my counter and in my shower.  It’s a subtle thing that’s actually huge for an organized person like myself. The plastic itself is recyclable and/or biodegradable, and according the the site, the bottles contain 40% less plastic than they would otherwise if they were not neat and square.

Secondly, their products are cruelty-free.  Their ingredients are mostly natural as well as mostly organic and gently harvested to minimize ecological damage. There are no sulfates or parabens either. I am so glad to finally be able to recommend a line that I can stand behind as great for your hair AND great for the planet.

Now comes the real juicy part. I plan to eventually use every product in this line, but for the first run I chose some items which I am very picky about when it comes to my own hair. My hair is long and needs moisture, so I figured Hydrate.Me would be a good place to start. Was it ever! The fragrance, oh my god – I have never spent so much time smelling myself. It is ultra sexy and natural, and isn’t overpowering. Throughout my day I give lots of hugs, and never have I been so proud to have people smell my hair, and I am getting so many compliments.  You probably remember my issue with the Schwarzkopf Oil Miracle line and how awful the fragrance was. Natural-smelling, all-natural product fragrance is such a big deal to most of my clients too, so you are all going to enjoy this stuff. Aside from the superficial things like packaging and smell, this shampoo and conditioner are super. The shampoo froths up quite richly and my hair feels really clean after only one scrub (no repetition needed).  It’s not moisturizing enough to use all on its own, but that’s OK with me. The conditioning rinse shuts my hair’s cuticle more tightly than any before, even the Rene Furterer Tonucia line! I love how quickly it works and how surprisingly light and bouncy my hair feels when it’s dry; there is no weight to this moisturizing duo, and this makes my fine wavy hair behave its very best.

I followed up after the shower each day for 2 weeks with the Staying.Alive leave-in spray. It also smells fantastic and doesn’t cover up the smell of the wash and rinse. In fact, they blend together nicely for a complex fragrance that I would wear as a perfume. I found this spray to be quite light even if I applied a whole lot. It didn’t give me the pieciness that I liked so much with the Schwarzkopf Oil Miracle spray…but that doesn’t matter because my hair is now in better condition than ever before. Good compromise, right?

Now here is my favourite product they make (so far): Body.Guard leave-in lotion. I was blown away by this product! I applied a loonie sized amount to towel dried hair and at the first touch it was COMPLETELY ABSORBED. Pure magic! I have never, ever, in over 20 years of using salon products (been using since about age 10), had such perfect, flawless product penetration. When I rinsed my hands with water, there was zero residue. You guys all need to run out and get this product because it really works, and is also intermixable with the whole styling range for extra conditioning if desired. Seriously. It’s amazing. I’m guessing there’s no need to tell you that it’s also weightless, but I have to mention it anyway. The entire Kevin Murphy line is meant to be weightless and natural in the hair – and it truly is.

kevin-murphy-product-testNext, I want to gush about how much I adored the Hair.Resort pomade. Check out the photos to the left: the back view is the product as it’s drying (you can see a lot of damp strands that are kinda straight) and the side view is of what it did to my hair once it was dry. Normally I have just one little coil at each side of my nape, and now I have many! The front didn’t dry as curly as it usually does, but I blame that on my tucking my hair behind my ear and pulling it through my fingers as I was typing this.  Again, this product penetrated beautifully and there was very little residue on my hands when rinsing with water. Oh…and the fragrance is so lush and beachy without smelling like a bikini contest. I am so tired of pina colada scented beach products…yawnnnnnn! Hair.Resort’s fragrance reminds me of floating in a lagoon with greenery, fresh fruit, exotic flowers and spices growing all around. Very earthy and sexy! I feel like an island goddess when wearing this product.

kevin-murphy-born-again-treatmentFinally, I used the Born.Again treatment once a week. It smells nice, but the fragrance is exactly the same as an Aveda deep conditioner that I used to use. Maybe it was one from Abba? I can’t exactly place it, but I remember the beige bottle, so it must be Aveda or Abba.  Anyway, it was from another natural line, and is the exact fragrance. I’m not the hugest fan of this smell, but it doesn’t matter too much because again the product truly delivers! I left it on for 30 minutes under a plastic cap, and it made a noticeable difference in the condition of my cuticle as well as my ends (which have been triple-bleached due to how resistant my hair is, believe it or not). Normally when I wake up, my ends are crumply and look like cotton wool. They have been smooth and shiny each morning for about a week now. This conditioner works!  I do a double-whammy with a Redken CAT treatment first, followed by the Born.Again.

One thing I almost forgot to mention: my hair did go through a detox with this line, similar to the one you’d get if you went No Poo, and it’s still clearing up. Honestly I’m not surprised this is happening, because I’ve been using chemically formulated products for quite some time. So…my hair is greasy and my scalp is breaking out right now.  It’s not so nice at all, but I’m certain that my hair will be even bouncier and freshier once it’s all over.

Stay tuned for more Kevin Murphy product reviews! I intend to test them all out. One additional small thing I appreciate about this line is that the majority of the products are available in a mini size. It’s perfect for a hairdresser like myself, because I prefer to test out products on my own hair so I can accurately recommend them to clients.

If you have additional things you’d like to add about this line, or if you’ve got any questions, please feel welcome to ask me! I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I understand that the Body Guard Hydrating Lotion was discontinued by Kevin Murphy. Do you know what date it was discontinued? Just trying to figure out of the bottles found on Amazon have expired.

I love the Body Guard and was so sad when it was discontinued! I loved how it was absorbed 100% by the hair with no residue…that stuff was amazing and I’ve never found an alternative. It was discontinued sometime in 2013 I think? Better forget about those bottles on Amazon, they are likely to be old, watered down or even filled with different product.

On the Kevin Murphy website there’s a new tab called product matchmaker all you have to do is answer a few questions about what you’re hair and your expectations are as an end result and voila, Kevin will give you a prescription recommended for your needs. it’s very cool check it out.

Hey! I’m just wondering if you’ve tried the plumping wash or plumping rinse by Kevin Murphy? If so, do you know of any products that are almost the same? Or have the same smell?

I’m so sorry, I haven’t had a chance to try the Plumping line yet. You could find a local Kevin Murphy salon and see what they know? Kevin Murphy usually uses one fragrance per line, so I’m unsure if there will be any overlap. Best of luck!
